Project Description

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We have divided and focused our efforts into four areas, or sections:

  • Education Section  Language Classes and Scholarships
  • HealthCare Section  Clinic, homecare nurses, blood donations
  • Clinic For Dogs Section  Clinic, rabies vaccination, dog population control
  • Social Development Section  Sponsorships, financial assistance

In order to continue our work, we are in need of, and searching for, corporate/major sponsors for each of our sections/projects.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT SECTION – SUMMARY

Tibet Charity’s Social Program aims to improve the standard of living of Tibetans living in India. It does this by providing and sourcing financial assistance for individuals and community groups at the numerous Tibetan settlements spread across the country.

Social Development Section – Sponsorships, financial assistance, winter survival

Many people and community groups appeal to Tibet Charity (TC) for help but TC believes it isn’t enough to wait on other people, we also have a duty to go out and find out where help is needed. In accordance with that commitment, TC staff make periodic visits to all the Tibetan settlements in India and remain in regular contact with the authorities administering them.

Tibet Charity carries out its mandate through 4 projects, the ‘Winter Survival/Essentials Project’, the ‘Community Development Project’, the ‘Help a Tibetan In-Need Project’, and the ‘Adopt a Grand Parent Project’. All make provision for supporting individual people in need, but the ‘Community Development Project’ and the Winter Survival/Essentials Project’ go further and fund schemes that benefit whole groups of people.

ADOPT A GRAND PARENT

Tibet Charity is always looking for people who are willing to sponsor destitute elderly people who have no one to take care of them. This is a serious commitment that will change someone’s life. We will be highly grateful if you can kindly support an elder as your grand parent and help him/her lead a more meaningful life.

It is really sad to see these people who have worked so hard after coming to India as refugees (many of them having separated from their families) when there was no support system whatsoever. The present condition of Tibetans in exile can be attributed to our elders’ hard work.

We are interested in hearing from you if you are willing to commit to supporting at least one individual for the remainder of their lives. To adopt a Grand Parent requires a minimum commitment of Rs. 1800 month.

HELP A TIBETAN IN-NEED

The Tibet Charity sponsorship fund provides Tibetans with monthly support, in most cases for a full year. Food, money, and shelter are provided by relief workers who are on the ground in India. We have staff, volunteers, and employees in Dharamsala that make sure that the funds are being appropriately delivered to those who need it most.

Many Tibetans are on the cusp of losing their battle as they live without adequate food, healthcare and schooling. For less than $1 a day, Tibet Charity can make sure that they have food to survive, access to clean water, housing, clothing, and urgently needed medical care.

If you want to help, if you want them to feel safe, and if you want to give them hope that the world is a better place, then donate today. This ongoing, monthly program helps ensure that they are given the opportunity, at the very minimum, to survive.

We are interested in hearing from you if you are willing to commit to supporting at least one individual for the remainder of their lives. Each individual in need will require around Rs. 1800 per month.

WINTER SURVIVAL- ESSENTIALS

Tibet Charity has been looking after the needs of the poor and sick in and around Dharamsala for the last ten years. We mostly cater to the needs of the poor, the sick and the elders who have no one looking after them or those who do not belong to any other institution or organized setups.

Winter arrives in late November and lasts until March. January remains the coldest month of the year with not more than 7°C of average low temperature. Snow and sleet are common during the winter in upper Dharamshala (including McLeodganj, Bhagsu Nag and Naddi).

When the winter gets harsh, we distribute warm clothes and bedding materials. Some of the things that would be useful in winter are: warm shoes, socks, jackets, hats, blankets/quilts, etc.

Raincoats or umbrellas could also be useful for these elders who go circumambulating around the temple of His Holiness.

Rs. 100,000 per year will help us to buy necessary winter clothes and other requirement for the elders in the region.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

When Tibetans first came to India in the late 1950s, they were offered land to settle on by the Indian government. The settlements developed slowly over time with help from state governments and foreign agencies under the administration of the Central Tibetan Administration. Today they have workshops, farms, schools, old people’s homes and clinics.

Though the Department of Homes, under the Central Tibetan Administration, look after their overall well-being, there are areas where NGOs, like us, need to step in and see what more could be done. We have therefore personally visited some of these Tibetan settlements in the remote areas and offered our limited service.

Some of the projects we have undertaken in some of the Tibetan settlements are:

  • Installation/repair of a water supply system
  • Provision of short term financial relief to homeless and disadvantaged individuals
  • Repair and upgrade of the accommodation in old people’s homes
  • Upgrade of facilities in crèches for the children of working parents
  • Provision of winter clothes and solar lanterns to nomadic families in Ladakh
  • Donation of beds to a hostel for students of the Lahaul & Spiti area

ADMINISTRATION/OPERATION

Financial efficiency matters. A charity’s ability to keep its fundraising and other overhead expenses reasonable is what determines how much of your contribution will be available to fund the charitable programs you are intending to support with your donations. Tibet Charity encourages our donors to consider a charity’s financial efficiency along with other, qualitative factors, when making their giving decisions.

Some non-profit organizations receive large donations of non-cash goods and services, which they are responsible for valuing. The dollar value a charity assigns to its non-cash donations is then mixed together with its cash revenue and expenses in its financial reporting. This often has the effect of making the nonprofit appear to be larger and operating more efficiently than it actually is. Such inconsistencies in the reporting make it difficult to compare the financial efficiency of different non-profit organizations.

With Tibet Charity, you will find a charity you can support that has operating overhead of 25% or less. That means we spend 80 cents or more of every dollar you send on program activities and just 20 cents, or less, is spent on fund raising and administrative costs. Only a handful of charities meet this standard for efficiency. When you make a general donation we will spend the money where it is most urgently needed. Be assured that all the money you give will go straight to the people you want to help because none of the private donations made to Tibet Charity are spent on administration.
